Phase-field modeling of wetting on structured surfaces.

چکیده
We study the dynamics and equilibrium profile shapes of contact lines for wetting in the case of a spatially inhomogeneous solid wall with stripe defects. Using a phase-field model with conserved dynamics, we first numerically determine the contact line behavior in the case of a stripe defect of varying widths. For narrow defects, we find that the maximum distortion of the contact line and the healing length is related to the defect width, while for wide defects, it saturates to constant values. This behavior is in quantitative agreement with the experimental data. In addition, we examine the shape of the contact line between two stripe defects as a function of their separation. Using the phase-field model, we also analytically estimate the contact line configuration and find good qualitative agreement with the numerical results.

Wetting and dewetting of structured and imprinted surfaces
Wetting and dewetting of structured and imprinted surfaces is discussed from a theoretical point of view. An appropriate separation of length scales is used in order to eliminate irrelevant parameters from the theory. This leads to a general description of the wetting phase which can exhibit various morphologies such as droplets, channels or films. We discuss some general features of heterogene...
متن کاملWetting of an Ising system with perfect and corrugated surfaces in a transverse field
Using the mean field theory, a comparative study of the wetting and layering transitions of a spin-1/2 Ising model with perfect and corrugated surfaces, is established. The phase diagrams are investigated and compared in the presence of both a longitudinal and surface fields. The effect of increasing the temperature and the transverse field on the wetting and layering transitions is outlined. —...
متن کاملAnalysis for Wetting on Rough Surfaces by a Three-dimensional Phase Field Model∗
In this paper, we consider the derivation of the modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for wetting phenomena on rough surfaces from a three-dimensional phase field model. We derive an effective boundary condition by asymptotic two-scale homogenization technique when the size of the roughness is small. The modified Wenzel’s and Cassie’s equations for the apparent contact angles on the rough s...
متن کاملPhase field modeling of hysteresis in sessile drops.
We propose a novel approach to describe wetting of plane solid surfaces by liquid drops. A two-dimensional nonconserved phase field variable is employed to distinguish between wetted and nonwetted regions on the surface. The imbalance in the Young's force provides for the exchange of relative stability of the two phases. The three-phase contact line tension arises from the gradient energy and c...
متن کاملModeling the Effects of Nanopatterned Surfaces on Wetting States of Droplets
An analytic thermodynamic model has been established to quantitatively investigate the wetting states of droplets on nanopatterned surfaces. Based on the calculations for the free energies of droplets with the Wenzel state and the Cassie-Baxter state, it is found that the size and shape of nanostructured surfaces play crucial roles in wetting states. In detail, for nanohole-patterned surfaces, ...
